Kabataang Gitarista Program

The Kabataang Gitarista during their performance for PASINAYA 2017 at the CCP Little Theater

The Kabataang Gitarista (KG) is a group of talented public high school students currently being trained in classical guitar. The students who come from high schools in Manila, Pasay and Paranaque receive free classical guitar training every Saturday morning under eminent guitar pedagogue Maestro Jose Valdez and his assistant Daniel Lopez through the support of sponsors.

The program was organized by the CCP Artist Training Division in August 2012 to promote appreciation for, and interest in classical guitar performance among public high school students; to provide the highest level of guitar training free of charge; and to develop a performing classical guitar ensemble.

The KG has given performances in selected public and private schools, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, besides other venues. The group has also participated in lecture-demonstrations and workshops to promote classical guitar among the youth. Some of its members have given solo performances in their respective schools and have won in inter- school solo instrument competitions.

In December 2016, the full ensemble gave a concert at the Podium upon invitation of FEBC to help raise funds for low power FM stations in far flung areas around the country. In February 2017, the ensemble performed for SPA students of Ramon Magsaysay High School and Mariano Marcos Memorial High School to promote classical guitar among its students. Last August 2017, the Kabataang Gitarista recently held its 5th Anniversary Concert at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

At present, around 60 guitarists are currently being trained under this program since. Some members who are already in senior high school and are currently enrolled in private schools due to their choice of courses, continue to be part of the program.

Due to several requests for invitations featuring a smaller guitar ensemble, the Artist Training Division in April 2016, put together a select group of five members consisting of two alumni enrolled in colleges of music who are pursuing a course in classical guitar, and three high school students. This independent ensemble has given outreach performances as well as lecture-demonstrations in schools. It has represented the Philippines in the “Asian Gems in the Arts” in connection with the 2016 Conference of the FACP (Federation of Asian Cultural Promotions) at the George Town Festival in Penang, Malaysia on August 28, 2016. The same members were likewise invited to perform as guest in the concert of renowned Australian guitarist Jacob Cordover in October 2016. In June 23 the ensemble won 2nd Prize in the 1st St. Scholastica’s College Classical Guitar Competition. At the same time, its member Edel Mark Bitao won 2nd Prize in the Junior Category of the same competition.

The 5-member ensemble gave a performance for public high school teachers in Baao, Camarines Sur, on August 22, 2017 upon the invitation of the Department of Education, Region V in connection with its initiative to organize a Kabataang Gitarista branch in the said region.
