GENERAL INFORMATION

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is pleased to announce the 4th Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival, Manila 2019 which will be held on July 18-21, 2019.

The festival is named after the founder of the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, the late National Artist for Music Andrea O. Veneracion, an esteemed choirmaster and choral clinician who was instrumental in the development of choral music all over the country.

The competition is open to choirs which will qualify in the following categories:

I. Folk Song
II. Equal Voices
III. Mixed Choir

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES

 

CATEGORY I: FOLK SONG

Repertoire
A minimum of three (3) choral works must include the following:

For FOREIGN Choirs:
• Two (2) choral compositions/arrangements using folk songs/folk material:
one (1) from the choir’s home country;
one (1) from any other country in the choir’s region;
• One (1) Filipino folk choral composition/arrangement.

For FILIPINO Choirs:
• One (1) Filipino folk song;
• One (1) folk song from the Asian region;
• One (1) folk song outside the Asian region.

Guidelines
1. Open to mixed choirs (SATB) and to choirs with equal voices.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is four (4). Maximum number of singers is forty (40).
4. The total performance time, excluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 13 minutes.
5. Any additonal song(s) must be freely chosen folk choral composition/arrangement.
6. Pieces may be sung a cappella or may be accompanied by pitchless traditonal instruments.
7. Choreography is allowed during the performance.
8. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

 

CATEGORY II: EQUAL VOICES

Repertoire
A minimum of four (4) songs must include the following:
• One (1) from the Renaissance/Early Baroque Period (piece may be originally written for mixed choir and arranged for equal voices choir);
• One (1) from the Romantic Period (may be accompanied by the piano);
• One (1) from the 20th – 21st century;
• One (1) freely chosen piece.

Guidelines
1. Open to equal voices: S(S)A(A), or T(T)B(B) singing in equal voices.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is twenty (20). Maximum number of singers is forty (40). However for participating choirs with more than twenty (20) singers, the number of singers may be reduced to at least twenty (20) singers for the Renaissance piece.
4. The total performance time, exluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 18 minutes.
5. Any additional song(s) must be freely chosen composition/arrangement for equal voices.
6. Pieces must be sung a cappella except the Romantic piece which may be accompanied by the piano. Pitchless instruments may be used.
7. Choreography is allowed during the performance.
8. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

 

CATEGORY III: MIXED CHOIR

Repertoire
A minimum of four (4) songs must include the following:
• One (1) from the Renaissance/Early Baroque Period;
• One (1) from the Romantic Period;
• One (1) from the 20th-21st century;
• One (1) obligatory piece.

Guidelines
1. Open only to mixed (SATB) choirs.
2. No age limit.
3. Minimum number of singers is twenty (20). Maximum number of singers is forty (40). However, for participating choirs with more than twenty (20) singers, the number of singers may be reduced to at least twenty (20) singers for the Renaissance piece.
4. The total performance time, excluding entrance and exit, must not exceed 18 minutes.
5. Any additonal song(s) must be freely chosen composition/arrangement for chamber choir.
6. All pieces must be sung a cappella, or may be accompanied by pitchless instruments.
7. Choreography is allowed during the performance
8. The use of microphones and other sound amplification is not allowed.

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS
• Only choirs that have been in existence for at least two (2) years are allowed to join.
• All applications will be screened by the Artistic Committee which will determine the acceptance of the choir.
• Only legally printed music, published editions, or duly authorized manuscripts can be used in the competition.
• It is possible for choirs to participate in more than one category. However, no competition pieces should be repeated.
• No recorded accompaniment is allowed.
• Performance time will not be interrupted by applause.
• Singing time must be strictly observed.
• A penalty for overtime by way of deduction from the overall score of the choir may be incurred depending on the number of seconds/minutes exceeded above the allowed maximum singing time.
• The jury reserves the right not to award a first prize if no choir meets the standards.
• Audio/video recording during the competitions is not allowed.

 

ADJUDICATION

A jury of five (5) internationally renowned adjudicators – one (1) from Europe, one (1) from North America, one (1) from South America, one (1) from Africa/Australia and one (1) from the Philippines will evaluate the competitors. All decisions of the jury are final.

 

CRITERIA

40% Technical proficiency (intonation, rhythm, dynamics, diction, choral blend, balance)
40% Musicality (interpretation, expression, style, loyalty to the score)
20% Overall artistic impression

 

AWARDS

MIXED CHOIR 1st Prize: USD5,000/ 2nd Prize: USD3,500/ 3rd Prize USD2,500

EQUAL VOICES 1st Prize: USD4,000/ 2nd Prize: USD2,500/ 3rd Prize USD1,500

FOLK SONG 1st Prize: USD3,000/ 2nd Prize: USD2,000/ 3rd Prize USD1,000

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION: Deadline is on April 5, 2019

• Fully accomplished application form; (downloadable here)
• Audio/video recording of two (2) to three (3) songs of different genres recorded within the last six (6) months prior to application;
• Recent profile and photo of the choir taken with the last six (6) months prior to application;
• Recent profile and photo of the conductor taken within the last six (6) months prior to application.

To be submitted after notice of the choir’s acceptance:
• Repertoire per category;
• Five (5) clear copies of the each of the music scores (to be returned after the competition)
• Permit for the use of original/photocopied original scores;
• Registration Fee:
For Foreign Choirs: USD300 (for one, two or three categories)
Filipino Choirs : Php10,000 (for one, two, or three categories)
