The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe is the University-wide organization for dance and the official dance troupe of the University of Santo Tomas (UST). The name Salinggawi is derived from the Filipino phrase “Salin ng mga dating Gawi at Lahi”, which translates to “transfer of customs and traditions” in English. Established in 1968, it iscomposed of students from different colleges of the universities who are scholars under the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA). The group ventured into different genres of dance to cope with the needs and demands of the university. Salinggawi became more versatile and studied other dance genres. The group gained more popularity as Salinggawi dominated UAAP Cheerdance Competitions. Recently, IPEA found the need to subdivide the group into Salinggawi Cheer and Salinggawi Dance Troupe so both can concentrate more on their training. Salinggawi Dance Troupe is slowly bringing back its form into contemporary and folk dance.
